Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
